Madonna of the Trail The idea for this monument arose in 1909 by a Missouri women wanting to acknowledge the “Santa Fe Trail” which had run through their state. In 1912 Rep. A.R. Borland of Missouri, introduced to Congress a name for that trail that our early pioneer ancestors traveled west on.
'The Madonna of the Trail' design was accepted by the members at the annual DAR conference in 1927. Mrs. John Trigg Moss, chairman of the DAR committee, suggested the design, and the monuments were created by the St. Louis sculptor, August Leimbach.
There are 12 Madonna of the Trail monuments across the country, from Maryland to California, on the National Old Trails Road. Two of the statues are close to here, the one in Richmond and the other in Springfield, Ohio.
